Automatic SRT subtitles from your video

An MP4 usually doesn’t contain subtitles – they have to be created from the speech. HeyCaptions transcribes your video, splits the text into readable lines of up to 42 characters and times every line to the spoken words. The result is a standard SRT file that works almost everywhere.

Before downloading, you can correct any word – the timing stays intact.

How do I convert MP4 to SRT?

Upload the MP4, wait for the transcript and click SRT in the Download tab.

Can I extract existing subtitles from an MP4?

This tool creates new subtitles from the speech. Subtitle tracks that are already embedded in the MP4 are not extracted.

Does it work with MOV or MKV?

Yes. MOV, MKV, WEBM, AVI and most other video formats work the same way.

Is HeyCaptions really free?

Yes, 100% free. No sign-up, no watermark and no paid “export” step.

What happens to my video?

Your file is only used to create your captions. It is processed on our own servers and permanently deleted as soon as you are done – at the latest 30 minutes after your last activity. We never use your files for anything else.

Which languages are supported?

HeyCaptions recognizes 99 spoken languages, including English, Spanish, German, French, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Turkish, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Hindi and Arabic. The language is detected automatically.

Are there any limits?

Files can be up to 500 MB and 30 minutes long. MP4, MOV, WEBM, MKV, AVI, MP3, WAV, M4A and most other formats work.
